Our process

Restoring and reimagining a period home calls for more than good taste. It requires sensitivity to the building, clarity in planning, and careful coordination from first ideas through to the finishing touches.

At BLHE, our process is designed to make each stage feel considered and manageable. We combine interior design, interior architecture, bespoke detailing and discreet modern living solutions, including audio visual and smart home integration, so that period homes can feel both timeless and effortless to live in.

Stage One: Initial Consultation & Brief

Every project begins with a conversation.

We take time to understand the property, your practical requirements, your aesthetic preferences and the way you want to live in the space. We also discuss scope, priorities, indicative budget and timescales, so the project starts with a shared understanding.

For period properties, this early stage is especially important. We consider the architectural character of the house, the features worth preserving, and where thoughtful change can bring the greatest benefit.

Stage Two: Survey, Space Planning & Concept Design

Once the brief is established, we develop the design direction for the home.

This stage may include reviewing existing drawings, site measurements, layout studies and concept ideas for how the spaces should function and connect. We look carefully at flow, proportion, natural light and how each room supports modern-day living while remaining true to the property’s original character.

Alongside the overall concept, we begin to shape the visual language of the project through materials, finishes, fixtures and atmosphere.

Stage Three: Interior Architecture & Detailed Design

With the concept agreed, we refine the scheme into a detailed design package.

This can include kitchens, bathrooms, joinery, lighting layouts, power plans, ironmongery, sanitaryware, finishes and architectural details. Where appropriate, we also consider discreet audio visual and smart home systems, ensuring technology is integrated carefully and never at the expense of the building’s character.

Our aim is to resolve every layer of the design with precision, so the finished spaces feel coherent, beautifully judged and practical to use every day.

Stage Four: Specification, Costing & Procurement

Once the design is developed, we prepare the information needed to move the project forward with confidence.

We produce schedules and specifications, liaise with suppliers and makers, and help establish realistic cost expectations. Whether sourcing bespoke joinery, specialist finishes, furnishings or lighting, we focus on quality, longevity and craftsmanship.

For clients, this stage brings clarity. For trades and suppliers, it provides the level of detail needed for accurate pricing and efficient delivery.

Stage Five: Collaboration with Trades & Contractors

Successful projects depend on strong collaboration.

We work closely with trusted trades, contractors, specialists and suppliers to ensure the design intent is carried through properly on site. Clear communication is central to our approach, particularly on period properties where unexpected conditions often require experience and flexibility.

By coordinating carefully across the team, we help protect both the design quality and the momentum of the project.

Stage Six: Installation, Styling & Completion

As the project nears completion, we oversee the final layers that bring the home together.

This may include final finishes, furnishings, lighting, window treatments, artwork, accessories and styling. We pay close attention to the overall feel of the spaces, ensuring the finished home feels calm, resolved and true to both the building and the client.

The result is a home that honours its history while supporting the way you live now.
